Postdoctoral seminar: ‘Not All Who Wander Are Lost: The Visibility of (Semi-) Nomadic Communities in the Evolution of Human Societies’

The Jaussen & Savignac Programme (Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne and The Royal Commission for AlUla) is pleased to announce the holding of its second postdoctoral seminar, from Tuesday 17 March to Tuesday 12 May 2026, at the Institut national d'histoire de l'art (INHA).

Silvia Lischi, a postdoctoral researcher of the Jaussen & Savignac Program, developed this four-session seminar on the theme of Not All Who Wander Are Lost: The Visibility of (Semi-) Nomadic Communities in the Evolution of Human Societies.

VEPMO Team Seminar - Rock Art Between the Two Shores of the Red Sea

A great synergy within the Jaussen & Savignac Programme (Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne et The Royal Commission for AlUla) ! Two of our doctoral contract students will exchange on the convergence of their research themes on "Rock art between the two shores of the Red Sea" as part of the seminar of the VEPMO ("From Village to State in the Near and Middle East") team of the joint research unit 7041 Archaeology and Sciences of Antiquity (ArScAn).

Elise Melão-Pinard (UMR 8068 TEMPS) will focus her presentation to ‘The rock art of the first pastoralists of the eastern Sahara (7th-4th millennia BCE): a study of the representation of habitat.’ Romy Vartin (UMR 7041 ArScAn, OrAM team) will then give a presentation on ‘Humans and animals: the evolution of relationships in rock art in Arabia.’ We look forward to the quality of their discussions!

The event will take place in Nanterre at the Maison des sciences humaines (MSH) Mondes (21, allée de l'Université) on Friday, 27 February 2026 from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. (René Ginouvès building, 4th floor, Council Room).


From 20 February to 13 March 2026

Presentation of archaeological missions in the Near East and the Arab-Muslim world

The Jaussen & Savignac Programme (Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne et The Royal Commission for AlUla) promotes the work of archaeological missions in the Near East and the Arab-Muslim world. This initiative aims in particular to raise awareness among students of dynamic scientific topics and to encourage exchanges conducive to the completion of professional internships and university research projects.

From 20 February to 13 March 2026, a dozen researchers will present the archaeological missions they are organising in Saudi Arabia, Oman, Kuwait and Jordan, covering a vast chronological and cultural field from Prehistory to the Islamic period.

The events will take place in Paris at the Institut national d'histoire de l'art (2, rue Vivienne) on Friday 20 February 2026 (Giorgio Vasari room, 2pm-4.30pm), Friday 27 February 2026 (Walter Benjamin room, 2pm-5pm) and Friday 13 March 2026 (Walter Benjamin Room, 1pm-3pm).
