New insights into the exceptional necropolis of Khor Rori!
Silvia Lischi, researcher within the Jaussen & Sauvignac programme, is leading the interdisciplinary hashtag#DHOMIAP Project, carried out in collaboration, and thanks to a formal agreement, with the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism - Sultanate of Oman. Her work focuses on the relationships between (semi-)nomadic communities and the South Arabian kingdoms, with particular attention to the role of these communities in the frankincense trade in Dhofar, southern Oman.
Over the past year, a new phase of research has begun through a collaboration with hashtag#BONESLab (Alma Mater Studiorum - Università di Bologna), opening an unprecedented window onto the individuals buried in the vast necropolis of Khor Rori which is one of the most remarkable archaeological complexes of the Dhofar Coastal Culture.
🔬The application of groundbreaking isotopic and bioanthropological analyses carried out with hashtag#BONESLab is providing fresh insights into mobility, lifeways and identity within this indigenous community, whose cultural traits were deeply rooted in adaptability and in the combined use of coastal and inland environments.
Find out a short summary of these first results in The International Association for the Study of Arabia Bulletin 2025, highlighting the exceptional nature of the necropolis and its significance within the wider Southwestern Arabian sphere.
