Master 1 Archaeology and Preventive Conservation Defenses
On 24 June 2026, students from the Master 1 Archaeology and Preventive Conservation – Jaussen & Savignac Programme (Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne and the Royal Commission for AlUla), presented the results of their professional experiences during their end-of-year defenses, held at the Institute of Art and Archaeology of Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, at 3 rue Michelet in Paris.
As an integral part of the programme, internships enable students to put into practice the knowledge and methods acquired throughout the academic year. The programme draws in particular on fieldwork and laboratory experiences, allowing students to develop complementary skills in archaeology, preventive conservation, and the study of collections.
Two students presented their experience at the Paphos training excavation in Cyprus, where they were introduced to different aspects of archaeological fieldwork, including excavation, recording, and the study of archaeological remains.
Other students presented their internship in preventive conservation and archaeological collections management at Alésia, which focused on the study, documentation, and repackaging of an older collection, mainly composed of metal objects and copper alloys. During this experience, they worked in particular on assessing the condition of the objects, analysing previous storage and packaging systems, prioritising conservation needs, and managing collection documentation.
These defenses highlighted the diversity of professional experiences offered within the Jaussen & Savignac Programme, as well as the skills students developed throughout their training. They also demonstrated their ability to combine practical experience, scientific reflection, and critical analysis in a variety of archaeological and heritage contexts.
