M1 Jaussen & Savignac students explore Paris’s medieval built heritage
As part of their training in archaeology, the students of the Jaussen & Savignac Master 1 programme (université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne and The Royal Commission for AlUla), devoted a session to the study of the enclosure built by King Philip Augustus in Paris at the end of the 12th century.
An introduction to architectural surveying
Under the guidance of Pimprenelle Atlan, the students were introduced to various techniques of architectural surveying. The session provided an opportunity to put into practice several essential operations for documenting a surviving structure: taking measurements, working to scale, recording architectural features and observing the characteristics of the building.
This practical approach allows students to apply the methods studied during their training to the direct observation of an architectural remnant.
Observing, analysing and interpreting a surviving structure
Beyond mastering surveying techniques, this exercise aims to develop the students’ archaeological perspective. Studying the built structure enables them to question the characteristics of a surviving element, analyse its features and propose an interpretation based on the data collected in the field.
This session therefore represents another step in their training, allowing them to put archaeological methods into practice and gradually develop their perspective as future archaeologists.
