An Archaeobotany Session at the Heart of Environmental Archaeology Training

As part of their environmental archaeology course, students enrolled in the first year of the Master’s programme in Archaeology and Preventive Conservation within the Jaussen & Savignac Programme (université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne and the Royal Commission for AlUla), took part in a practical session at the archaeobotany laboratory of the Mondes Social Sciences and Humanities Research Centre in Nanterre.

Supervised by Dr Hussein Madina, the session introduced students to laboratory methods for processing carpological samples, as well as the initial stages of sorting and identifying plant remains.

The students also became familiar with botanical reference collections, specialist publications and atlases essential to the study of plant remains.

This hands-on experience contributes to their training in environmental archaeology methods, allowing them to gain practical insight into the tools and resources used to study plant remains.
