ÆGYPTUS – Oasis and Desert in the Roman Period
An exhibition in Rome featuring Gaëlle Tallet
Until 15 November 2026, the Museo dell’Arte Salvata, located in the Aula Ottagona of the Baths of Diocletian in Rome, is hosting the exhibition ÆGYPTUS – Dal Nilo al Mediterraneo. Oasi e deserto in epoca romana.
Organized by the Museo Nazionale Romano, the exhibition explores the history of Egypt’s oases and desert regions during the Roman period, from the 1st century BC to the 5th century AD. It brings together archaeology, video, digital reconstructions and artificial intelligence to offer new perspectives on these territories and their history.
As part of the exhibition, Gaëlle Tallet, Professor at Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne and Director of the Jaussen & Savignac Programme, took part on 9 July 2026 in a conference alongside Corinna Rossi of Politecnico di Milano. The conference focused on Roman settlements in the Oasis Magna and at Umm el-Dabadib.
The conference provided an opportunity to explore the history of these territories located on the margins of the Roman Empire, as well as their role in ancient networks of movement, supply and exchange.
The exhibition resonates with the research conducted within the Jaussen & Savignac Programme, particularly its research theme dedicated to environmental heritage and oasis landscapes. It offers an opportunity to discover new approaches to studying oasis landscapes and their role in exchanges and interactions between Mediterranean societies.
